Let's make you feel better together.

WElcome
it's lovely to have you here!

I am Madeleine Doelker Berlin, I am an Associate Licensed Professional Counselor, a Social Scientist, an immigrant from Germany, a mom, and I am supporting people through life's transformative moments and complex emotional journeys. Learn more about me.

My primary areas of focus are women's mental health, perinatal counseling, migration & mental health, tough life transitions, and counseling in German language. I practice from a multicultural, feminist, anti-oppressive, systems-focused perspective that is BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ affirming. Just a heads up: while I specialize in women's mental health, I can support anyone, regardless of gender or sex. My focus means I have a strong awareness of the societal and biological influences, as well as gender/sex-specific psychological research, that affect mental health and treatment."

Counseling Style & Modalities

I approach therapy through an intersectional, feminist, and trauma-informed lens, creating a safe and welcoming space where you can express yourself freely. My goal is to help you connect with your values, needs, and identities in a meaningful way.

I strive to be open and personable in our sessions—I genuinely love to laugh and foster an empathetic environment for exploring your thoughts and feelings. Using a mix of therapeutic modalities like integrative client-centered therapy, strengths-based counseling, CBT, narrative therapy, liberation psychology, and feminist and existential approaches, we’ll enhance your personal insight and coping skills, helping you feel more self-confident, connected to yourself, and capable of living the life you want to live.

Building a strong therapeutic relationship is essential to my practice. I’m here to empower you as you navigate life’s challenges, and I often incorporate homework assignments to provide practical skills for you to apply at home. I believe growth happens in connection with others, and therapy is a space for non-judgmental, personalized change. Together, we’ll uncover and build on your existing strengths to face life’s challenges with confidence.

About me

I was born and raised in Germany and came to the US as an adult. I am the mother of two children, and I have lost pregnancies on my journey to motherhood. I am a counselor who is deeply committed to authenticity, individual fulfillment (whatever that looks like for you), advocacy, and helping individuals navigate through the messiness and complexity that life often is.

My academic journey: I earned an M.A. in Social Sciences, focusing on social inequality research in Berlin, Germany. After immigrating to the U.S., I pursued an M.Sc. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Marquette University. This educational journey has equipped me with a deep, holistic understanding of what drives human behavior and how individual thoughts and actions are influenced by both personal factors and broader social dynamics. I’m passionate about applying this knowledge to help others navigate their unique challenges and empower them to create meaningful change in their lives.

My professional path has been diverse, encompassing many years in homeless services, some work in substance abuse services, as well as internships in German politics. Over the course of these experiences, I have managed many crises and seen many people at the brink of what they thought they could handle. But I have also witnessed the incredible resilience of humans in extraordinary circumstances.

Today, as a counselor, I walk alongside individuals during their transformative journeys and life's unexpected twists. Drawing from my personal experiences of immigration, parenthood and loss, and my professional experience and training, I grasp the profound impact of unforeseen circumstances and the resilience required to rebuild one's identity. I have the professional understandings and tools to help you feel better.

Rates and Fees

Initial consultation & fees

I offer a free 20-minute consultation by phone to speak about your reasons for seeking therapy and to answer any questions you may have about my services. We can also schedule a first appointment at this time.

I am committed to increasing the access to counseling and am offering a fees on a sliding scale. Fees per session range from $70 - $125 depending on your income.

Though commonly called a “therapy hour,” a regular counseling session lasts for 45-50 minutes. I charge the same fee for other professional services you may need. Other services might include, but are not limited to, telephone consultations lasting longer than 15 minutes and preparation of records or treatment summaries. I will pro-rate the cost of work for periods of less than 45 minutes. I charge my regular fee for sessions missed or cancelled without sufficient advance notice of cancellation or rescheduling, as agreed upon at the intake.

Insurance

I operate on a fee-for-service model and am an out-of-network provider. This model is similar to how you might pay for other services such as an attorney or an accountant. Most insurance plans will cover a portion of the session fee, once your deductible has been met. How it works is this: you will pay directly for your session and, if you’d like to be reimbursed by your insurance, I will provide you a receipt to submit to your insurance company. If you would like to investigate the possibility of reimbursement for out-of-network coverage, please check your policy carefully and ask the following questions of your insurance provider:

  • Do I have behavioral health or mental health benefits?

  • Does my particular plan have an out-of-network benefit?

  • Do I have a deductible, how much is it, and has it been met?

  • After my deductible is met, what percentage of the fee does my plan cover?

  • How many mental health sessions per calendar year does my insurance plan cover?

  • Do I need an authorization to begin outpatient therapy?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?

  • How do I access the form(s) needed to submit a request for reimbursement?

Payment

Payment for services is an important part of any professional relationship. Unless we make other specific arrangements, payment is due at each session. I will provide you with a receipt, which you may be able to submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. You can use money from all three types of health spending accounts – health savings accounts (HSAs); health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs); and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) – to pay for sessions. Oftentimes, such health spending accounts have debit cards that can be used to pay for services. You can also pay with cash or your personal credit/debit card and have your health spending account reimburse you. Please note that it is always your responsibility to pay our full agreed upon fee for services at the time they are rendered.
