My name is Madeleine Doelker Berlin (Licensed Professional Counselor, IT), and I am committed to supporting people through life's transformative moments and complex emotional journeys.

My primary area of specialty is working with folks in the perinatal period to address concerns around fertility, pregnancy loss, pregnancy, and postpartum mental health concerns.

I am also a good fit for people navigating tough life transitions of any kind, young adults struggling to find a place in the world, parents of older children, people who have immigration history, and women in general. I am also a good fit for people looking for counseling in my native language, German.

What I do

Why Wildflower Counseling?

Wildflowers are the epitome of resilience, strength, and sustainability. They can grow in the harshest terrains and circumstances, where they can still bloom and thrive. Sometimes their seeds lay dormant for months or years, waiting for the right time to blossom. And when they finally grow and flower, each of them is different. But all are beautiful, radiant, and powerful, while also imperfect, rugged and wild. Their roots grow deep and help nourish the soil, and their flowers feed bees, butterflies and other insects. Similar to wildflowers, I believe that every human is different, every human is beautiful, every human is imperfect and a blessing to the world around them, AND every human has resilience in them, beyond their wildest dreams.

My Counseling Style

I know that life is often so rough, so messy, and so unpredictable,  and that adjustment can be slow, painful and full of grief and struggles. Inspired by wildflowers' resilience and power I provide counseling that listens to and understands each individual person in their unique circumstances and with their inherent strengths and challenges. My counseling mindset is rooted in trauma-informed counseling, strength-based counseling, existential counseling, and liberation psychology. I use a variety of evidence-based techniques depending on what is most beneficial for my clients, such as CBT, narrative counseling, and mindfulness. I will give you homework to make sure that you can get the most out of this. Also, I love to laugh, and I curse sometimes :)

About me

I was born and raised in Germany and came to the US as an adult. I am the mother of two children, and I have lost pregnancies on my journey to motherhood. I am a counselor who is deeply committed to authenticity, individual fulfillment (whatever that looks like for you), advocacy, and helping individuals navigate through the messiness and complexity that life often is.

My academic journey: I earned an M.A. in Social Sciences and Sociology in Berlin, Germany. Upon immigrating to the US, I furthered my education with an M.Sc. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Marquette University. My education has allowed me to develop a deep and holistic understanding of what makes people do what they do, and how those thoughts and actions are shaped by both individual-level factors and social dynamics.

My professional path has been diverse, encompassing many years in homeless services, some work in substance abuse services, as well as internships in German politics. Over the course of these experiences, I have managed many crises and seen many people at the brink of what they thought they could handle. But I have also witnessed the incredible resilience of humans in extraordinary circumstances.

Today, as a counselor, I walk alongside individuals during their transformative journeys and life's unexpected twists. Drawing from my personal experiences of immigration, parenthood and loss, and my professional experience and training, I grasp the profound impact of unforeseen circumstances and the resilience required to rebuild one's identity. I have the professional understandings and tools to help you feel better.

The Space

Come join me in my cozy, little office in downtown Milwaukee!

Can't make it to the office? No problem, we can also meet online for a Telehealth session.

Do you have a child and you don't know if you will have childcare for the session? Just contact me and we can see together how we can make it work.

Rates & Fees

Initial Consultation & Fees

I offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone to speak about your reasons for seeking therapy and to answer any questions you may have about my services. We can also schedule a first appointment at this time.Fees are $140 per session. Though commonly called a “therapy hour,” a regular counseling session lasts for 45-50 minutes.I charge the same fee for other professional services you may need. Other services might include, but are not limited to, telephone consultations lasting longer than 15 minutes and preparation of records or treatment summaries. I will pro-rate the cost of work for periods of less than 45 minutes.I charge my regular fee for sessions missed or cancelled without sufficient advance notice of cancellation or rescheduling, as agreed upon at the intake.

Insurance

I operate on a fee-for-service model and am an out-of-network provider. This model is similar to how you might pay for other services such as an attorney or an accountant. Most insurance plans will cover a portion of the session fee, once your deductible has been met. How it works is this: you will pay directly for your session and, if you’d like to be reimbursed by your insurance, I will provide you a receipt to submit to your insurance company. If you would like to investigate the possibility of reimbursement for out-of-network coverage, please check your policy carefully and ask the following questions of your insurance provider:

  • Do I have behavioral health or mental health benefits?

  • Does my particular plan have an out-of-network benefit?

  • Do I have a deductible, how much is it, and has it been met?

  • After my deductible is met, what percentage of the fee does my plan cover?

  • How many mental health sessions per calendar year does my insurance plan cover?

  • Do I need an authorization to begin outpatient therapy?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?

  • How do I access the form(s) needed to submit a request for reimbursement?

Payment

Payment for services is an important part of any professional relationship. Unless we make other specific arrangements, payment is due at each session. I will provide you with a receipt, which you may be able to submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. You can use money from all three types of health spending accounts – health savings accounts (HSAs); health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs); and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) – to pay for sessions. Oftentimes, such health spending accounts have debit cards that can be used to pay for services. You can also pay with cash or your personal credit/debit card and have your health spending account reimburse you. Please note that it is always your responsibility to pay our full agreed upon fee for services at the time they are rendered.
